Sending alcohol as a gift to another province
You can now have a bottle sent from a producer in one province to someone in another, where that producer is approved for the destination — a Nova Scotia cider for a friend in Toronto, a case of Annapolis Valley wine for a birthday. Three things decide whether the order will actually go through.
1. The recipient’s province is what counts
This is the part people get wrong. It does not matter where you live or where you are ordering from — what matters is the delivery address. The producer must be authorized by the liquor authority of the province the parcel is going to. 2. The recipient must be of legal age
The destination province’s drinking age applies: 18 in Alberta and Manitoba, 19 everywhere else in the agreement. 3. It has to be for personal use
The programmes describe shipments to individuals for personal consumption; a gift for personal use is the use case they cover. What they do not cover is resale — you cannot use this route to stock a shop, a bar, or an event you are charging for.
A note on winter
Wine freezes. A bottle left in an unheated truck or on a porch in January can push its cork or crack outright, and some producers simply pause shipping to colder destinations for part of the year rather than risk it. If you are sending something in deep winter, it is worth asking the producer directly — and ordering earlier than feels necessary.

Can I send wine as a gift to someone in another province?
Yes, where the producer is authorized to ship into the recipient's province. What matters is the destination address, not yours: the producer needs approval from the recipient's provincial authority.
Does the recipient need to be of legal drinking age?
Yes. The destination province's drinking age applies — 18 in Alberta and Manitoba, 19 in the other participating provinces. Can I send alcohol as a gift to Quebec?
No. Quebec did not join the July 2026 agreement, so there is no route for an out-of-province producer to ship to a Quebec address under it.
How far ahead should I order for the holidays?
Earlier than you would for an ordinary parcel. Some producers pause shipping in deep winter to avoid freeze damage, carriers slow down in December, and a parcel that needs someone home to receive it can take an extra delivery attempt. Two to three weeks is a sensible buffer.
